Whenever someone asks how to get a nice glow on their skin, my answer is always the same: try double cleansing first! I think making the switch to double cleansing beats the effect of adding many other products to your regime. And if you’re considering exploring the famous 10 step Asian beauty regime, double cleansing is definitely the first place to start.

Skin is much brighter and has better texture. Don’t get me wrong, by no means am I saying that my skin is perfect, but there has been definite improvement. The system works!
So, what is double cleansing?
As the name suggests, you wash your face twice.
Step 1: An oil-based cleanser
Step 2: A water-based cleanser (your usual cleanser).
How to double cleanse
With dry hands and a dry face, massage your oil cleanser into your skin for about 4 mins. Add a splash of water to emulsify the oil (the oil should turn milky), and then massage the milk in for another 30 seconds, then wash off with warm water.
The science behind double cleansing
So, why do we have to wash our faces twice?
Just think about the multiple layers of product you put on your face everyday — skincare, sunscreen, primer, makeup — not to mention the pollution, dirt, dust and compact touchups that continue sticking to your face as the day goes by.
With all this clinging to your skin, you need to get rid of them before you can even start cleaning your skin. Not cleaning your face properly will lead to a whole host of unpleasant issues — breakouts, clogged pores, blackheads, whiteheads, hives, dullness, and flaking.
According to dermatologists, double cleansing is akin to ‘scraping mud off a pair of leather boots before you can treat the leather’.
It’s not just about getting all the gunk off — a good oil cleanser also softens your skin, which goes a long way towards the absorption of all your favourite subsequent skincare products.
And if that hasn’t convinced you yet, a recent study by Lancome showed that women who cleansed their skin properly saw results from anti-ageing products twice as fast as those who didn’t.
How double cleansing changed my skin
When I first tried double cleansing, I noticed an immediate change to my skin texture. My face was just incredibly soft, and my skin just felt so clean and plump.
As my enthusiastic daily double cleansing went on, I was amazed to note other changes after just a week. My rough spots disappeared and my pores shrank without needing any exfoliation, my face was bright, clean and smooth, spots of redness calmed down, my bb cushion stopped flaking in places on my face, my skin felt less irritated in the shower, plus I got a mad kick out of massaging my face with oil for 4 mins a day… it was just all round happiness, and this love affair with double cleansing is still alive and kicking.
Is double cleansing for you?
Double cleansing is for everyone, whether you have oily, sensitive, acne-prone, dull, ageing, or normal/ combination skin. Everyone needs clean skin, and cleansing once simply won’t kick it any more.
Because cleansing oils are formulated to emulsify upon contact with water, they do not stay on your skin, clog your pores, or cause irritation. Also, many Korean products are formulated without skin irritants such as mineral oils, parabens, or sulphates, which makes them suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin!
How often should I double cleanse?
The most common instruction is everyday, morning and night. However, if you have very sensitive skin, I recommend just doing it at night.
Either way, look forward to the cleanest, clearest, and most glowing skin of your life! Give double cleansing a go, and let me know how your skin changes! I promise you won’t regret it.
