So here it is! A frequently requested review of the very hip and indie J.One Jelly Pack, along with a bonus review of the J.One Black Jelly Pack, the sleeping mask version of the former.

J.One is a relatively new indie brand founded by famous Korean actress Ha Jiwon, aimed to give busy, on-the-go women a range of multitasking products that help to cut down on time/ effort spent on skincare, without compromising on the quality.

J.One Jelly Pack (white) review

This is a fascinating product, and definitely one of my favourite finds this year. The J.One Jelly Pack is an all-in-one skincare and makeup product — it claims to act a treatment and daytime leave on mask for your skin, and also works as a special ‘makeup gripper’, giving your skin a dewy and slightly sticky finish that will adhere perfectly with your makeup. It works to hydrate and prime your skin for makeup.

How to use: Right after cleansing, you can skip all your usual skincare steps and just slather this on. Follow with sunscreen and makeup (no need for makeup base either).

Texture: This is where this product is both interesting and brilliant. It is an extremely viscous product that might be alarming at first. How you tackle this is to pump out 4-5 pumps of the product, and gently spread the jelly on your forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.

Trust me when I say the product is so sticky and thick that it will seem impossible to spread. Using the tips of your fingers, gently pat the product into your skin until it’s absorbed. This might take 3-4 mins of patting, but trust me, it is worth it.

After the product is absorbed, leave it on for another minute or so before applying sunscreen and your makeup. It will feel slightly tacky to the touch still, but that makes it perfect for ‘gripping’ your makeup and helping it adhere to your skin better and for longer. Think of it as a makeup version of your favourite rubbery base coat for your nails.

Results: The J.One Jelly Pack will leave you with soothed and bouncy skin, with a finish that is so dewy it’s shiny. It will also vanish your pores (no kidding). If you’re looking to shortcut your way into dewy, healthy, and youthful skin, this is the way to go.

Not only does this minimise pores and create a perfect canvas for makeup, but I find that there is no need to touch up my makeup for the entire day when I use the Jelly Pack.

Ingredients: Not bad! Pretty clean, and featuring some of my favourite things — niacinamide, rose water, and chamomile.

Suitable for: All skin types! Especially for those of you who use BB creams or BB cushions, because they tend to slide. Not with this baby! Also suitable for anyone looking for a dewy finish to their makeup. Lastly, perfect for anyone who wants to hide their pores (and last I checked, that would be everybody).

I recently tried using this with J.One’s own BB cushion, and it worked beautifully. Review on that coming up soon!

Not suitable for: Anyone who favours powder makeup (eg. mineral powder as foundation). I don’t think the texture of the jelly pack will go well with powder going on on top. I’ve tried this with powder blush, and that seems fine though. Also not suitable for anyone who prefers a matte finish (but please don’t! Matte finishes only make your face look flat).

GO4GLOW rating: 4.8/5

Rating scale:
1/5: No no no; this product needs to be recalled as it can’t even fulfil its primary claim.
2/5: Caused problems; I wouldn’t even give this away so as not to inflict the pain on someone else.
3/5: OK but nothing amazing; I might give this away to see if it works better for someone else.
4/5: Pretty good! I will continue to repurchase if I don’t find anything better.
5/5: YOU GLOW GIRL! HG status; I will not give this up unless it’s discontinued.

Where to buy: Shopee for Singapore; Sephora or Glow Recipe for US

J.One Black Jelly Pack (sleeping mask)

So bolstered was I by the success of my J.One Jelly Pack that I decided to check out the Black Jelly Pack too, which is a sleeping mask version of the white Jelly Pack (which is more for day use).

Unfortunately, the J.One Black Jelly Pack was a bit less successful.

How to use: Right after all your usual skincare steps, use the J.One Black Jelly Pack as your last step (replacing your night moisturiser).

Texture: Where the white Jelly Pack has a brilliant texture that is key to its success, the Black Jelly Pack has a puzzling texture that doesn’t really add to the product. It’s an odd, black, slippery jelly that slides all over my face, making it very hard to spread and absorb. I had quite a difficult time trying to pat the jelly into my skin, because it was simply slipping around everywhere.

Once I did get it on, it looked good — dewy and glowy, and my skin felt quite hydrated. However, within an hour of putting on the black jelly, my skin just went back to its normal semi-dehydrated state.

Results: As a sleeping mask, the black jelly lacks somewhat in the hydration factor, and acts more like a normal moisturiser instead. The next morning, my skin wasn’t that much plumper — in fact, it seemed… oilier? It’s possible that the mask wasn’t hydrating enough, and therefore caused my skin to overcompensate by producing more oil instead.

Ingredients: Honestly, not a very sexy ingredients list, but pretty safe in terms of irritants. Even niacinamide doesn’t feature as strong as it does in the J.One Jelly Pack (white)!

Suitable for: Normal skin. If you don’t need extra hydration, then this is a nice soothing mask that works fine. If you’re looking for a sleeping mask with a bit more oomph and sexy ingredients, check out the Cosrx Moisturising Honey Overnight Mask instead.

Not suitable for: Dry skin. This product lacks the hydration factor. If you have dry skin and are looking for a nice nourishing overnight mask, check out the Cosrx Ultimate Nourishing Rice Overnight Spa Mask instead.
