[GO4GLOW]: 5 plane essentials that will prevent you from shrivelling up in the air!

Flying is stressful. There are a million considerations — making your flight on time, fighting with a potential crowd, lugging your heavy suitcase around, making sure you didn’t forget anything. But for me, it’s the damage that being in a plane inflicts on my already dry and sensitive skin!

What does being on a plane do to your skin?

It dries it out big time. Your skin is most comfortable at 40 – 70% humidity, and on a plane, the humidity is about 20%. With the humidity of a desert, cabin air can really damage your skin’s hydration levels. And as we all know, when our skin is dry, it makes up for it by producing oil overtime, resulting in grease instead of glow.

It’s not just your skin that gets dry. Your eyes, lips, nose, and body will be affected too. The dry cabin air coupled with the fact that you will probably be drinking more coffee and less water when flying will result in big time dehydration. So skip that coffee/ wine, and drink up! If you have really sensitive eyes, carry around some eyedrops too.

Your skin becomes even more exposed to UV damage. Yup, being closer to the sun only results in a higher chance of UV damage. So, don’t forget to WEAR YOUR SUNSCREEN.

Don’t worry! Here are 5 plane essentials to keep you glowing instead of greasy:

1. A soothing sheet mask

Yup. There’s nothing that will replenish the hydration in your skin as well as a nourishing sheet mask. If you think it looks weird, then well, just get over it. Because this is the time that your face needs a mask more than ever.

Glow tip: If you have sensitive skin that gets irritated when you’re stressed out/ dehydrated, I recommend using milder sheet masks that are suited for daily use, instead of something that is too rich. I tend to favour essence masks from Korea or Japan for this purpose. Usually Taiwanese masks are richer, and might not be a good idea if your skin is already irritated.

2. A face mist (THE RIGHT KIND)

You might already be familiar with my singular obsession with face mists (which are a staple of my daily essentials),  but please please please remember to pack your face mist on the plane too. If your hands aren’t that clean on the plane (and they won’t be), and your face feels dry, a hydrating mist will be the best way to replenish the moisture in your skin.

Glow tip: When I say ‘the right kind’ of mist, I mean one that is moisturising, non-astringent, and contains botanical extracts to hydrate and nourish the skin. This means no tea tree oil or witch hazel mists, and definitely stay away from thermal water mists when you’re on the plane. These might end up making your skin drier than before as they evaporate off your skin.

Some of the most nourishing and moisturising mists I’ve tried — Whamisa Organic Flowers Olive Leaf Mist, Innisfree Olive Real Oil Mist, and Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Face Mist.

3. Hand cream (that doubles up as a moisturiser) 

A heavy duty hand cream is another one of your BFFs on a plane ride.

Glow tip: Get a hand cream that doubles up as a face moisturiser! That way you can save some space in your bag. Smooth excess cream onto your elbows and arms too.

Try to get oil-based hand creams to get the most hydration possible. I’m really loving my Weleda Skin Food, which contains a mix of oils and lanolin to really soothe and hydrate the skin.

4. Lip balm 

This might sound like a no-brainer, but I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your lips hydrated on the plane! If not, you could be fighting lip flakes for days after.

Glow tip: If you want to go all out, try using a lip sleeping mask such as the Aritaum Ginger Sugar Overnight Lip Mask to really seal moisture in. By the end of your flight, you’ll have plump, gorgeous lips that are ready for your favourite lipstick.

5. Cleansing water 

I’ve been on long haul flights where the thought of having to wash my face in the tiny bathroom has been such a turn off that I’ve skipped all that. The result? A very irritated face full of tiny pimples by the end of 12 hours.

If you have cleansing water on you, you can get your makeup off and clean your face without leaving your seat! Some cleansing waters have a mild exfoliating effect, which will then help your skin to absorb your moisturiser better.

Glow tip: You can use your cleansing water to clean your hands and refresh your body quickly too! I especially love Son & Park Beauty Water, as it is a kickass multi-tasker.
